Doug Hansen has been a Fresno-based artist and illustrator for over thirty years. Born in Fresno, CA in 1952, he is the eldest of six children in an artistic family. His father, Bob Hansen, was a U.S. naval aviator and the family was stationed in Texas, Hawaii and Maryland before returning to Fresno, California in 1974.

Doug received his BA in Art from
California State University, Fresno, in 1974. He earned his Masters Degree in Art at CSUF in 2002 and was selected as the Graduate Dean’s Medalist in the College of Arts and Humanities.

Doug is an associate professor in the Department of Art and Design at CSUF.

He teaches rendering and illustration in the Graphic Design area and considers it a privilege to teach at his alma mater.

He is recognized locally for his 23 years of illustration work at The Fresno Bee, and especially for his weekly series of pen and ink drawings of Valley landmarks called Fresno Sketchbook. The Fresno Sketchbook drawings were published as books in 1991 and 1993. Through the years, Doug has also illustrated over 90 historic Fresno homes that appeared in the Huntington Boulevard Homeowner’s Association calendars. In the ‘70s and ‘80s he was active in the underground comix scene.

Doug collaborated with his mother, Janice, and brothers Keith and Craig, to draw and paint the 126-foot long mural of the San Joaquin River now permanently installed in the Woodward Park Regional Library. The family received the Horizon Award in 2000 from the Fresno Arts Council for contributions to the community through the arts.

Doug illustrates a monthly article by well-known author Mas Masumoto for The Bee. The partnership with Masumoto has lead to two works published by Heyday Books in 2004 and 2007. Doug illustrates a twice-yearly feature called Tree Portraits for the FresnoState Magazine and has worked from home as a freelance artist since 1974.

Doug looks forward to the publication in spring 2009 of Mother Goose in California, a children’s ABC book he created and illustrated.

Welcome to DougHansenArt

One of the greatest joys in my life is making pictures that go with stories. For years, I have been fortunate to create and share illustrations with the people of Fresno, the San Joaquin Valley, and California. Now this web site allows me to share my art with everyone. I hope you’ll find something to enjoy. Please visit again as new things are added all the time. Sincerely, Doug Hansen.

TOYS AND SCULPTURE

Although most of my art is two-dimensional, the work I created for my Master’s exhibition in 2002 was sculptural, toylike objects inspired by some toys I created as an art student 30 years earlier.

COMIX

During the 1970s and ‘80s, I had a great time creating comic art in the freewheeling world of underground comix. Have a look at my work from that period starting with Frezno Funnies in 1972 and ending with Death Rattle in 1986. For the comix completists out there, I’ll include a Comicography.and covers of all the comix I contributed to..

Lots more to come in the future

FRESNO STUFF

All Fres
no, all of the time. Since 1970, Fresno has fascinated me and has inspired all sorts of artwork, some serious and some just plain silly. This will eventually include Fresno Sketchbook art, the Seven Wonders of Fresno, long-forgotten Big Raisin cartoons, the Fresno Coloring Book, a Fresno Map, Huntington Boulevard Homes, Fresno Keepsakes, and my design for a Tower District mural.

AT THE FRESNO BEE

I wa
s a proud member of the Fresno Bee Editorial Art Department from 1979 until 2002. There’s no better way to learn to draw than to do it every day, usually under deadline pressure. From black and white ink drawings to Photoshop illustrations in full color, our work in those decades mirrored changes in technology and society.
